I just bought my first shares in the stock market. Where do I go next in building a good portfolio? I have spent $400 in buying stock in my first company through National City bank. I plan to invest in at least 2 other companies, but I am wondering on what makes a good stock portfolio. Is it the amount of money I put in or the amount of companies I own stock in? I am also in college so I have only a little over $1,000 dollars to spend so far. I should have phrased my question with a little more detail. My stock purchase of $400 dollars was enough to buy me 200 shares in the company I bought stock in. Was 200 shares enough?

I have about $4700, but actually only $700 right now, because i have $4000 in a private pharmaceutical company right now): so...with 700, i was going to invest in one of the following, since i dont have enough money to diversify yet, either: Ford Motor Co. Key ratios, numbers and stats to look at before investing into a stock? I want to creat a small portfolio for my first time, but i want to have a well diversified portfolio as well. Can my Yahoo portfolio performance be charted and compared to other funds? I have two portfolios that I've entered into Yahoo Finance portfolios which I track. The first is a group of six stocks and the second is a group of ETFs. I like the feature within the stock charting tool in which you can compare funds against each other and see their relative performance in terms of percent. This way you can see how one fund or stock compares with, for example, the DJI. I would like to know if you could take your portfolios and assign it a specific symbol then chart it against other funds and stocks in the same way. In order to be accurate the chart feature would have to take into account the value of the investment of each component and also when that component was purchased. Can this be done now? If so, how do I make it work? If not is there a way to suggest it to the Yahoo finance group so a feature like this could be added?

What are the best blue chip stocks to buy right now? I am starting to build a core portfolio of large-cap/blue chip stocks as a foundation. Would it be better to invest in one different stock a month (at say $5 a trade) until the target percentages are met OR pay a monthly fee (say $15 for 6 trades per month) and contribute the target percentage to all my stocks every month. The issue I have with the first option is that after I make an investment in one stock in one month, it might take 6 months until I get around to investing in it again. Is a new investor like myself better to get some experience stock investing first before applying leverage? I am 18 years of age and I will officially have a brand new, live share dealing account with my bank opened up this week. I have read books and have practiced for months on stock investing, spread betting and CFD trading. I don't, however, think I should immediately jump into leveraged products like spread betting or CFD's straightaway as I am a beginner to the financial markets regardless of the countless books I've bought snd read on investing and trading. What I would like to know is, from an experienced investor perhaps, is if this is a wise decision, i.e. get some experience in actual share investing for maybe 2-3 years until I turn 20-21 years of age and then apply leverage such as spread betting or CFD's to make my portfolio grow? Is that a better idea rather than jumping right into leverage straightaway with spread betting and CFD's? Please I really need your help/advice. Thanks.

Is diversification of portfolio really that wise? As a new investor, I have been bombarded with advice to diversify my portfolio. At first glance, this makes sense: it's not a good idea to put all my eggs in one basket. If I own only one stock and it tanks, there goes my money. But let's look, for example, at mutual funds and T-bills. They seem to move in opposite directions. By buying both, I am ensuring that a losing day in mutual fund is somewhat offset by gains in T-bills. But isn't that just a way of ensuring that I never have a really good day, because any gain is offset by a loss? Otherwise, why diversify? I understand that not all investments run exactly in opposite directions, but isn't the point of diversification to reduce risk, and therefore reward?

I have stock losses. Why does Turbo Tax say I owe $3400 in Federal Taxes after pulling up my Etrade portfolio? While I was doing my taxes online, I have to file my stock investments naturally (in 2009 I did about 28 trades. A couple of them may be washed stocks but generally they were short term stocks). While doing so, I opted Turbo Tax to pull my file from Etrade and after doing so my refund of $500 something dollars dwindled quickly in the red for a total of $3,400 roughly in Federal Taxes and $600 something for Illinois taxes. Needless-to-say, I was astonished and angry. The problem that I have here is that I lost money in the stock market all across the board (roughly $3600) and my gain/losses indicates that since the majority of the losses are in the red. Granted there are a few stocks that I sold and profited from, but that itself is overshadowed by huge loses. Why is that? How is it that I am paying taxes on money that was already taxed, that I invested I LOST it in the market? Is this an error? If it is when it's fixed is the money owed going to decrease??? Apparently, I have to manually input date and price purchases after the fact, so I'm guessing these figures are bound to change? I have no idea. I'm tempted to go to H&R block and have someone in person do this that is more experienced. But in anycase, it can't possibly be that I owe money on a portfolio that overall nets me a $3600 loss for 2009.....can it? I never owed taxes before and I generally received a generous refund given that I'm in the military, and that I don't have to pay Illinois state taxes because of my occupation. But since this is the first time I invested in the market, this makes filing taxes a bit complicated and stressful endeavor. As of now I have not filed my taxes and holding out until I get some answers. I'd like some clear and concrete answers before I file with regards to my situation, please.

Concerns about My Yahoo Beta? I understand that classic My Yahoo is going away. This is very disappointing because there are a number of things I really dislike about My Yahoo Beta. Is the current version the one that we will be forced to move to? Here are a couple of changes that are **not** for the better: - The vertical spacing on stock portfolios is much wider with the "bubble" icons. I can't see all of my stocks on the first page any more - The "*" indicator for "News" next to each stock has been replaced by the bubble which is less informative at a glance. I don't want to have to mouse over each stock to know if there is news. I would rather have option to just show the asterisk for news - I **hate** the ad in its forced position at the top right column- it displaces valuable content that used to be there. I would rather have it at the top of the page where it was before

Is this a bad time to invest a lot in the stock market? I have a lot of my investments in a money market fund earning about 5.5% a year. I just got approval from the company I work for to invest with another B/D, so I was thinking of taking the money out and putting it into a trading account with mostly ETFs. It seems like the market has been rallying lately so I'm afraid of coming in at the top. Am I better off waiting for a down day? How to calculate the beta of this portfolio? Suppose I made a portfolio of my own which include 30% stocks, 20% mutual fund, 10% coporate bond, 10% treasury notes and 30% for short-sale. My question is whether I should liquidate my entire portfolio to pay for the down payment. Would trading the portfolio for a down payment be a good investment? It would be hard to come up with the cash for a 20% down payment without selling off a good chunk of it. Also, is it wise to keep the ETF's right now or should I look for lower-risk investments if I plan on using the cash within a year? It is pretty well diversified and the returns have been decent these past few years. By the time I plan on buying, I should have about 18-20k in cash savings in addition to the portfolio. Question: What if the estate liquidates the portfolio and distributes cash? Will the estate have to pay a capital gain tax, thus resulting in a lessor amount to distribute to the heirs than had it been distributed as stock?
