Developing a Knowledge Management System? As part of my final semester project I have to develop an application end to end. I've chosen KMS (Knowledge mgmt sys) as my project topic. The thing is programming isn't really my strong point. But its compulsory to develop an application. So, for KMS I was thinking of using PHP and MySQL as languages. I would like to add features like discussion boards, chat, uploading of documents/files in the form of videos, pdf, txt, doc, ppts, etc., browsing and searching, and blogs. What do you suggest I should for developing this - use docuwiki/mediawiki (I can't really understand how to make a portal using that) or should I develop these from scratch?

Knowledge Management System? I'm making a KMS for an academic environment. Just starting with making one for a course in a university. Its part of my final year project. My question is, is there a way that i can download different open source components for the modules and integrate them all into a single environment? The things i need are - a login and registration module - a module to manage user roles - uploading, browsing, downloading and searching of files. something like a Content Mgmt. (thinking of using Drupal/mediawiki) - an Instant Message module - blogging and comments for the same - maybe a bit mind mapping thing Softwares like Drupal and Mediawiki have some of the above components but not all. hence, i want to integrate different ones. Is it possible to do so? How? PS : I don't want to use Moodle because its more of a course mgmt software rather than KMS thanks :) William, my question was not what is KMS but rather I need some help in building one. Please read the question properly before copy - pasting replies

What makes a good content management system (CMS)? We are talking complete knowledge management and integration of a contact management system, internal communications (including description of roles, contacts and activities of every part of the organisation, forums, news, calendar (training, team events, notices) Geographic Information System (GIS) - googlemaps, accounting, forms, categorised links and FEEDBACK. Constant improvement to meet the needs of the user or visitor is very important. I want to integrate an effective rating system for content similar to Amazon and also a relational suggestion system where it predicts your selections. It knows you are so complete personalisation is possible. However, too much freedom and there is no consistency, so as much as possible we have to build in templates and integrated guidance, as in popup tooltips. How do we put all this together neatly? I'm making mindmaps of current organisation and have a staff survey. The most important consideration is keeping it simple. help appreciateD
Which is the best open source and enterprise Document Management System (DMS) in the market today? I want to implement a Document Management System (DMS) in our organization. It should have an indexing facility, and a search facility. Additionally, it’s best if the system is enterprise, meaning that it can be accessed within a Wide Area Network (WAN), and managed remotely, like the way web based systems are. These are not restrictions but minimum requirements, so any good system out there is welcomed. The system should run in either Windows or Linux but preferably in Windows operating system. An example of such a system is Tivoli, JBOSS, and Knowledge Tree

Feeling smaller and younger than I am - What can make me seem more important? This might seem like an odd question, but at 5'3" and 26, I'm the shortest, youngest, and youngest-looking among my co-workers here. Also by nature/personality I'm typically quieter than not. Now not to toot my own horn here, but in my job at least, I'm pretty much the most productive and efficient at what I do. I've come up with some revolutional concepts and have implemented an effictive knowledge management system, among other departmental improvements as well. Also, despite my not being the most senior person here, I'm pretty sure that I'm the most knowledgeable as well (I work in a helpdesk for computer and technology support.) Now the problem I have is that I'm seemingly often overlooked... possibly because people automatically assume that because others are older or have been here the longest (or have grey hair), that they are the most qualified to give the most accurate and logical answer. More often than I would like, I feel overlooked and under-appreciated, while others are given the benefit of the doubt, I'm given a sideways glance or fake smile or half-nod of the head. I'm sick of society recognizing people who look older and are taller and just automatically assuming that these people are more important and more qualified than us short and quiet people. Even at many resturants people just assume that I'm not the one paying and they always address the older-looking person... and it bugs the crap outta me. Are there any suggestions that will help to make me just... stand out more or to at least appear to be more important, older, and sophisticated? I don't necessarily want to have to change who I am; just the way people perceive me. Thanks for your input. Okay, let me add a few details here. 1) I'm not a loner 2) I'm not a "woe is me" emo person that tries to blame everything on everyone else... people don't want to help people who don't help themselves. 3) I do have relationships with the people I work with - it's the managers and the "other" people that do this. 4) I don't walk with my head down all the time, and yes I smile too! 5) I do generally help people, and I am a hard worker. 6) I don't appreciate comments where people think everything is my fault - this is just another example of what I don't like about society is how everyone is willing to point the finger and say "you you you" but no one is willing to change anything. Bottom line is - I can't change how someone else acts or chooses to treat others. People judge by image, so what "image" are people look for? As insignificant as it is, do I need to start quoting movies and become a know-it-all with sports? Wear expensive clothes? Seriously...

Should public schools include basic money management in their curriculum? Most kids who emerge from our inner city school systems have no knowledge of basic money management. Shouldn't we be teaching these kids how to management a household budget. How to manage a checking account. How to manage their credit. How to save for the furure. How not to over extend their credit. So many of these kids today leave high school completely unprepared for the pitfalls of the road ahead of them. They enter the workforce without any knowledge of how to manage the money they earn. Many inner city kids come from low income families and don't get this knowledge at home. Managing money is a basic skilled required to lift oneself out of poverty. Isn't this a skill we should be teaching all children?

Explain the differences between data and information? In the electronic marketplace of today, there’s so much to be known, and so little time to learn it. That’s why many organizations are turning to computer systems that can not only produce information as outputs but also work to combine those outputs in ways that add value—knowledge—for the people using those systems. Lotus Development Corp. calls it "knowledge management." Knowledge management helps a company gain insight from its own experience. Through knowledge management, a company can focus on storing and accessing knowledge for such things as problem solving, dynamic learning, strategic planning and decision making. Refer to your web resources to visit the Lotus Website. Locate a recent news article about a company using Lotus Notes or other knowledge management software, such as Domino. Briefly summarize the article, considering the following questions: What are they using the software to do? How would the activities or decisions of the users differ if they didn’t use the knowledge management software? How does data differ from information?

Is a monthly fee unreasonable for a content management feature on a website? We recently had our website redesigned. Everything is perfect about it, looks far more professional than our old one. The problem is, someone in our company has been up in arms about a monthly content management fee. I don't think it's unreasonable at all, as it allows us to control almost everything about our site. It's never static, like our old site was, and it's given us way better search engine presence. This is what they do for the fee: -Host the site on a secure server -blog -discussion board -add and delete pages -eblast newsletter feature -embedded videos and mp3s -photo galleries -complete store management system (can change specials daily, easily add/delete products, give out coupon codes, secure checkout, etc) -email subscriber list manager -customize keywords for SEO -site visitor stats -etc. They're also constantly checking up on us to ensure that the site is performing well and giving us advice on the wording, blogs, etc. I like the program because it allows us to do all of this with ease with no knowledge of web code, I feel it's so easy, my grandmother could do it with no problem. I can't seem to get my partner to agree with this, however, and he thinks a monthly fee is a manipulative scam and insists that other web designers could give us all of this features without the fee. Our old website didn't have this fee but cost about a fourth more than the new one and didn't have nearly the amount of technical support and was so unprofessional-looking, it was embarrassing. I guess my main question is how to get him to see that the fee isn't unreasonable. I've tried to tell him that web design is far more complex than he thinks but he seems to think he can go to school and design one himself.

My first rotation will be based on Corporate Information & Security. One of my managers recommended the book "Information Technology and Audit" buts its 720 pages long and costs $100. The position is ideally for Spring 07 graduates but they made an exception and took me since I was great and am a Dec 2005 grad. I majored in Management Information Systems. Could u please tell me some great websites online and other areas where I can really enhance my knowledge in the area of "Information Technology and Audit" and "Corporate Information Security"? Thank you so much it would be really helpful.

How to get started with Drupal? I have a little knowledge of PHP and MySQL (to the point of being able to create a simple content management system of my own) and would like to start learning Drupal. Right now, the Drupal manual/documentations don't make much of a sense, as this is my first time attempting with a framework. I would love for you to give me tips on how to get started with Drupal. Thanks much. @wunti: I already know what it is. ;;
What would you say is the most useful business related degree? I'm starting my 4th year of college and I am currently a Management of Information Systems Major. The problem is that I have been having second thoughts on if I really want to do this as a career. Other options I have considered are Marketing, General Business, and maybe even Management. I like the idea of general business because it gives you a wide range of knowledge to use. On the other hand it doesn't specialize into any one area and I'm not really sure what kind of job oppurtunities would be available to me with it.
What is the origin of the first living cell? If one believes that a living cell can come into existence by coincidence, then there is nothing to prevent one from believing a similar story that we will relate below. It is the story of a town: One day, a lump of clay, pressed between the rocks in a barren land, becomes wet after it rains. The wet clay dries and hardens when the sun rises, and takes on a stiff, resistant form. Afterwards, these rocks, which also served as a mould, are somehow smashed into pieces, and then a neat, well shaped, and strong brick appears. This brick waits under the same natural conditions for years for a similar brick to be formed. This goes on until hundreds and thousands of the same bricks have been formed in the same place. However, by chance, none of the bricks that were previously formed are damaged. Although exposed to storm, rain, wind, scorching sun, and freezing cold for thousands of years, the bricks do not crack, break up, or get dragged away, but wait there in the same place with the same determination for other bricks to form. When the number of bricks is adequate, they erect a building by being arranged sideways and on top of each other, having been randomly dragged along by the effects of natural conditions such as winds, storms, or tornadoes. Meanwhile, materials such as cement or soil mixtures form under "natural conditions", with perfect timing, and creep between the bricks to clamp them to each other. While all this is happening, iron ore under the ground is shaped under "natural conditions" and lays the foundations of a building that is to be formed with these bricks. At the end of this process, a complete building rises with all its materials, carpentry, and installations intact. Of course, a building does not only consist of foundations, bricks, and cement. How, then, are the other missing materials to be obtained? The answer is simple: all kinds of materials that are needed for the construction of the building exist in the earth on which it is erected. Silicon for the glass, copper for the electric cables, iron for the columns, beams, water pipes, etc. all exist under the ground in abundant quantities. It takes only the skill of "natural conditions" to shape and place these materials inside the building. All the installations, carpentry, and accessories are placed among the bricks with the help of the blowing wind, rain, and earthquakes. Everything has gone so well that the bricks are arranged so as to leave the necessary window spaces as if they knew that something called glass would be formed later on by natural conditions. Moreover, they have not forgotten to leave some space to allow the installation of water, electricity and heating systems, which are also later to be formed by coincidence. Everything has gone so well that "coincidences" and "natural conditions" produce a perfect design. If you have managed to sustain your belief in this story so far, then you should have no trouble surmising how the town's other buildings, plants, highways, sidewalks, substructures, communications, and transportation systems came about. If you possess technical knowledge and are fairly conversant with the subject, you can even write an extremely "scientific" book of a few volumes stating your theories about "the evolutionary process of a sewage system and its uniformity with the present structures". You may well be honoured with academic awards for your clever studies, and may consider yourself a genius, shedding light on the nature of humanity. The theory of evolution, which claims that life came into existence by chance, is no less absurd than our story, for, with all its operational systems, and systems of communication, transportation and management, a cell is no less complex than a city.
